I think I lost 5th gear in my Outback. I drove from St. Louis to Columbia, roughly 120 miles. 80 the whole way in 5th. Hit traffic right outside Columbia and I popped into neutral to coast. Tried to go back into 5th and it ground, went in and popped out. Couldnt even jam into gear after that. How fucked am I?

With the car off can you get it into 5th?

Have you checked under the seats?

In a few cars I've driven they're reluctant to go into 5th when cold. My driving instructors Citroen used to pop out of 5th when cold too. Never had it happen when the car was warm though. Hopefully it's the linkage out of adjustment or something.

You need to push in the clutch, take the shifter...

Broke ass syncro probably. Did it grind going into 5th before letting off the clutch? Almost definitely a bad syncro, but since it popped out, you may have to re-adjust your linkage, replace any linkage bushings, and hope that it'll still work.
Welcome to Subaru transmissions....Im not really surprised. At speed you could try double clutching, but honestly, dont drive on it much, consult a transmission shop soon. It has the potential to blow up. Ask me how I know....

Now is your chance to rebuild it with a lower 5th gear from a legacy
